Beck Family https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2020/10/beck-family I loved this fall family session.  The mom did a great job picking out outfits, and we ventured up towards the mountains for their session.  The goal was to find someplace with fall colors and we did just that.  The sun setting over the top of the trees left a gorgeous sun glow haze and the view was beautiful.

This family has two identical twins and at first I was worried I was going to mix up their names or forget who was who.  Thanks to the moms genius thinking the boys each had a bracelet on that helped tell them apart.  One of the boys also had a scratch on his face which I edited out, but during the session it helped me out.  Did you know I edit all those scrapes, bumps, scratches and bruises?  So when your kids trip the day of photos and scrape up their nose, chin, or hands you don't have to worry.  You can just show up and enjoy your family photos.  I will handle the rest.

We had fun during this session playing airplane, running through the grass, dancing in a circle, tickling, cuddling, running, and laughing.  It was such a perfect evening.

Kooper https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2020/3/kooper When I was growing up and people would talk about one day being a mom and having kids I knew that I always wanted to have 4 kids.  I knew that I wanted to have an even number of kids.  My reasoning may seem a little odd but to me it makes perfect sense.  I have always loved amusement parks since the time I was little.  The thrill of the rides, the waterpark, the games you can play, the delicious food.  The atmosphere of an amusement park is my happy place.  I can walk through the gates and instantly be in a better mood.  It puts a smile on my face just thinking about it.  Well at amusement parks you ride in sets of 2 for most rides.  When my family goes to an amusement park I wanted everyone to have someone to sit next to on a ride.  Have an odd number of family members and too bad someone has to sit alone.  So 4 was the perfect number of kids to have.  10 years ago I had our first kid, then 8 years ago the 2nd, 4 years ago the 3rd, and finally this year kid number 4 joined our family.

I always dread being sick and hate being pregnant so it was very hard for me to want to get pregnant again but I knew kid number 4 was going to be the perfect addition to our family.  So I introduce Kooper Carey.  He joined our family on June 27th, 2019 weighing 7 lbs 8 oz.   All during labor I told myself I was going to hold the camera and take photos as I was having him.  That was my full proof plan up until about 5 minutes before, when the doctor told me I needed to hold my legs to push.  So I got the settings all ready, passed the camera off to my husband, and prayed he got something in focus.  He did an amazing job and got so many shots I love.  Here are some from his birth!

Jurassic Park Cake Smash https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2019/7/jurassic-park-cake-smash Earlier this year I was hired to do a first birthday cake smash session.  The mom had mentioned that her little boy loved dinosaurs and she wanted a dinosaur cake smash.  I didn't want to do the typical dinosaur cake smash and wanted to create something epic. Something that had not been done before!  With Jurassic World coming out I knew exactly what we had to do.... A JURASSIC PARK CAKE SMASH!  As soon as I had the theme picked out ideas started coming like crazy.

I contacted my favorite backdrop company Lacey and Lee Co and asked the owner if she could design a Jurassic Gates backdrop.  I had looked everywhere at so many different companies and nothing existed yet.  I wanted it to look like the entrance to the park with the cables broken, as if a dinosaur had just escaped.  She came through with something more amazing than I could imagine.

The next Idea I had was for a giant egg. I knew that I wanted an egg big enough that the little boy could sit in it.  So I got creative and purchased a 36" balloon from my local Hobby Lobby.  I blew it up using my blow dryer and found a bucket that it could sit on to start the paper mache process.

I asked my local Elementary school if I could have the newspapers they throw out each day and I ended up with a giant stack for free.  I cut the newspaper into strips about an 1 1/2" wide and the length of the paper.  You can cut strips to be whatever size you want.  I got a large bowl and mixed together flour and water until it was a waffel batter consistency.  I used about 5 c. water to 4 c. flour at first and just adjusted accordingly.

Then I dipped the newspaper strips in the flour water mixture and ran the strip between my pointer and middle finger to get any excess to drip off.  Then I just applied the strips to the balloon.

Once the entire balloon was covered I let it dry.  It is important to let it dry in between layers so that it can harden properly.  This takes the longest time.  I did 5 layers for my egg but should have done a few more to make it more sturdy.

After I had enough layers on the balloon and it seemed firm enough I pulled out some old brown and white paint I had sitting in the basement and an old sponge to sponge paint on the base color.  I didn't want brush strokes showing so a sponge worked well to give it a bit of texture and variation in the paint.

After the base layer of paint dried I bought a can of textured spray paint from our local hardware store and spray painted the outside of the egg to give the texture a real dinosaur egg might have.

I let it dry overnight and the next day I pulled out a box knife to cut the egg in half.  This was the hardest part because I didn't want to ruin all of my hard work.  I drew with a pencil the shape I wanted for the cracked egg and then cut it out.  It cut no problem with the box knife.  I seperated the two halves and painted the inside of the egg with the same old brown and white paint and a sponge so that if it showed in any photos it didn't look like newspaper strips. Now that I had the egg complete I had to work on the setup.  For the setup I wanted a dirt road leading to the gates, so I pulled out some Mocha savage seamless and some darker brown paint I had lying around from our kitchen and I sponge painted it to look like a dirt road.
Here is a top view of the egg, how I stuffed it, and the road I sponge painted for the flooring.  You can purchase this as a digital backdrop on my etsy site Newborn Digital Drops

To complete the setup I really wanted a jeep.  The family of the boy had an old power wheels broken down in their garage that needed some TLC.  The Dad paints cars as a side job and he was able to fix up the jeep.  I sent him a photo of what I wanted and he came through with the perfect Jurassic Park Jeep.

It was finally time to put the set together.  I pulled out my boxes of greenery and called some friends to borrow dinosaurs. It was definitely a labor of love, but I am in love with how the set turned out. Here are some photos from the session.  I even had my cake maker make a tire cake and this T-Rex devoured the tire.

Maveryk https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2019/6/maveryk This little guy and his family had a trip planned last month to come to Idaho and visit their families.  They live in Iowa currently and I was thrilled when his mom messaged wanting to book a session while they were in town. His mom requested a football theme- specifically an Iowa Hawkeyes theme as his Dad is a big fan.  We went for a tailgate football cake smash and I love how the session turned out.

I am lucky to work with a super talented local baker and her hamburger cake was perfect for the tailgate theme!

Happy Birthday Maveryk!

Maxine Turns One https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2019/5/maxine-turns-one I absolutely love when clients come back to see me for first birthday sessions.  I took this little girls newborn photos a year ago and I can't believe how fast it went by.  Here are some photos from her newborn session last year so everyone can see how much she has grown.

So one year later she came back to the studio and we stayed along the same lines as her newborn session with a neutral simple color scheme.  Mom requested a giant balloon, simple whites, some greenery, and maybe some purples.  She brought along a purple flower from her Grandpas garden to use in the session and I love the pop of color it added. Here is her session...

Hans Senior Session https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2019/4/hans-senior-session I loved everything about this seniors session!  We were able to incorporate some of his favorites sports into his session and the dynamic lighting we did for those were my favorite.  Hans plays wide receiver for the Bonneville Bees, and wrestles.  His main requests for his session were some photos in his football and wrestling uniforms.

When were shooting the football ones at the Bonneville High School Stadium a nasty storm came rolling in and it started to pour rain.   The wind was awful and kept knocking over the light stand holding the strobe and umbrella that created the dynamic lighting.  We had to get creative and pile stuff on top of the stand and shoot through the wind and rain to get the shots we did.  The sky was so moody and dark it made for some fun lighting in those photos.  Hans was even a super good sport and dove for the ball landing on the ground quite a few times to get some action shots.

For the wrestling ones we went over to the school locker room, gym, and weight room.  It was fun to be able to do something a little different with the lighting and create some fun images to showcase his love of wrestling.

If you graduate in the class of 2020 now is the time to book your custom senior session!

Brittney https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2019/4/brittney Last Fall I was able to venture up into some gorgeous country to photograph this senior with her horses.  We were lucky enough to have a beautiful golden hour and some dreamy light during the session.  Brittney competes on the Rodeo team in breakaway, team roping, barrels, poles, and goat tying, so including some elements of her passion and talents were a must!

She has qualified for state 2 years, placed 8th in the state last year for barrels and has won over 20 buckles!

While editing her photos it really made me miss summer, fall and all things warm.  I can't wait for the nice weather to return.  Until then I will daydream and just look at her photos!

Makayla https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2018/5/makayla It has been crazy busy lately and right now I have 180 photos to edit.... yes... 180.  I am trying to get caught up in the next week and a half before we leave to Disneyland which means I need to edit about 17 photos a day.  Depending on the session that can take anywhere from 3-5 hours.  So for the last few nights I have started editing after my kids are in bed and edited until 2 or 3am.  I am exhausted but it will all be worth it when I am at Disney and not stressing about photos.

Here is a gorgeous little girl I got to photograph 2 weeks ago.  Her Dad owns a tree service and so we had to take a photo on a tree stump.  Her mom requested close ups as well as sibling photos.  I could not believe how well behaved all the kids were.  They were model material and did exactly as I said.  It was a dream to work with this family and the photos turned out beautifully.  Congrats Jenna and Scott!

Andrea https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2018/3/andrea This session was bursting at the seams with adventure.

The session started off with this gorgeous pregnant mom and I getting stuck in deep drifts of snow.  After trying to dig and rock the truck out we decided to abandon it and take another vehicle to the top of the cliff because we risked losing all the sunlight if we stayed around to dig it out.  So we left the truck and took off in the Dad to be's Jeep.

He then drove us through thick and tall sage brush to the top of the cliff, but the jeep was not unharmed.  On the way up the rough terrain the muffler was ripped off the jeep and when we arrived at the top there was a foul smell and a little smoke coming out from under the jeep.  So we left the jeep with the Dad to be and hiked the 200 feet left to the edge of the cliff.  We were able to see the whole valley below and the views were breathtaking.... and so was the wind.   It was a freezing cold day with a high of 28 degrees and the wind made it even colder.  We quickly took the photos we wanted on top of the cliff and hiked back to the jeep.  By this point the Husband had ripped the muffler the rest of the way off and left it on top of the cliff.  We then made the climb back down the mountain to where the stuck truck was.

The husband proceeded to dig and then was finally able to tow the truck out.  We then finished up the session at the bottom of the cliff where it was even colder than the top.  It was everything we could do to not shiver and stand still long enough to take a photo.  At this point it was below 20 and absolutely freezing in the shadows of the cliff.  However there is one thing I know for sure.  Andrea will always remember the adventures of her maternity session and these photos just go to show how much she rocked her session.  Even in freezing cold temperatures she made the day look warm.

Bryndi https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2018/2/bryndi All growing up I was a tom boy.  I was the girl playing football, or basketball with all the boys at recess.  I loved anything outdoors.   So when Bryndi told me she was a tom boy and loved her truck, dirtbiking, fox racing, playing the guitar, and all things outdoors I knew we were going to get a long.   She brought her guitar, truck, and a riding shirt to the session and I loved being able to incorporate her tom boy side as well as her girly side.  She is so stunning and gorgeous and it was an honor to be able to take her photos.

Ronan https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2018/1/ronan It has been a while since I blogged a session, but one of my New Years Goals is to try and blog a session right as I finish it so that I do not forget about it.

I got the chance to work with this family for the older sisters 1st birthday photos last year and they came back to see me when they had this new little guy. It is always fun to see how much kids change and grow.  Raegan has grown a lot since her 1 year session and loved cuddling up to her brother.

Dupree https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2017/11/dupree The mom of this family of boys is one of my best friends.  She booked this session as a birthday present for her husband.  She wanted him to be able to get some fun photos with each of their boys.  As you can tell from the photos they are huge BYU fans.  The dad even had a different shirt to wear for pictures with each of the boys so that it was unique for them.   Then when we did photos of them all together they all had their BYU sweatshirts. It was such a fun idea the mom had and I am sure they will look back on these photos for years to come and get a good laugh.

Kru Cake Smash https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2017/6/kru-cake-smash I have an amazingly talented friend who is the owner of Seare Studios here in town and we have been collaborating together lately for a couple different shoots.   This one was soooo much fun!  I came to her with the idea that I wanted a camping themed backdrop with trees and a moon and what she came up with blew me away.  The little boy that I had this session planned for comes from a family that loves to camp.  The mom told me they are a huge camping family and if she could have any cake smash it would be a camping theme.  So Ashley Seare with Seare Studios and I went to work.   Here is how the amazing handpainted backdrop turned out!   If you want to purchase this backdrop or have a backdrop you would like handpainted head over to http://www.searestudios.com/ you will be glad you did!    After I received the backdrop I went to work with a variety of props and ideas and this is the setup I came up with.

The adorable white wash wood floor is from http://backdropoutlet.com/ and is the 7202 white wash wood floor in a 6x8 dura drop.  I picked the rocks and wood for the firepit up from my front yard and gathered a few other camping items from friends in town.

The cake for the setup could not have turned out any better.   My cake is lady is AMAZING!!   I told her that it was a camping theme and she went to town and came up with this adorable cake...

Kru showed up for his session and was not very happy from the get go, and we ended up having to try on two seperate days to get some photos.   We did end up with some very cute ones even if he wasn't super happy.   But it was his birthday and he could cry if he wanted to.

Kauer Wedding https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2017/5/kauer-wedding It was such a privilege to photograph this fun couple for their special day.  From taking Engagement photos, to designing and ordering their announcements, and photographing their wedding- I was with them from start to finish.

Here are some photos from their Engagement Session.

After the Engagement Session I designed a wedding announcement with the woodsy winter feel they wanted.

And on the big day I was able to capture all the special moments that they will want to remember forever.  Congrats Mr. & Mrs. Kauer!

Camden https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2017/4/camden I loved being able to photograph Camden for his newborn session.  My favorite part of newborn sessions hands down is designing and putting together the setups.   I like to create a unique and fun setup for each individual newborn... that is part of what makes me a prop hoarder.   I like to keep each session fresh and unique.   I found the gorgeous drift wood bowl on a yardsale site for $15 and it was so fun using it for the first time.

Oliver Turns ONE https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2017/4/oliver-turns-one This little guy is such a fighter.   When he was born he only weighed 1 lb 15 oz.  He was born 14 weeks early at only 26 weeks and look at him now.  He had the cutest little rolls and chunk to spare.  He could not have been more perfect.  We went with a nautical theme because he was able to sail through a pretty tough storm.

Backdrop and Floordrop are from Backdrop Outlet.  Cake toppers, and Banner are from Two Chihuahuas.  Bow tie is from Little Boy Swag.  Suspenders are from Armoniia.  Tissue Paper Pom poms from Pom poms for Parties.

Branson https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2017/4/branson It is great to be 8!  I was so honored to take the important baptism pictures for this guys baptism announcement.  My daughter thinks she has dibs on him and thinks he is pretty cute.  His mom told me that he wanted his photos done at the temple and I was pretty excited when we showed up and the weather and lighting were perfect.   Also how adorable are his outfits that his mom picked out.  So handsome!

Brevan Turns 5 https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2017/4/brevan-turns-5 This little guy is always full of personality.  He makes the best faces, and has the best jokes.  He told me while at his session that he is going to be a girl chaser just like his Dad was in High School.  I can already see the girls are going to be chasing him.  He is such a stud.

Barkley Family https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2017/4/barkley-family I was able to photograph Ivy for her newborn session, and it was great to see her 9 months later at her family photo session.  She has gotten so big and loved being able to just play around down by the river.  She was pretty shy at first... and just wanted to cuddle with mom, but she warmed up.

The weather was gorgeous with the sun setting above the rocks.

By the end Ivy had it...

But she put up with me for a few more pictures.   By the end of the year I will have done 4 photo sessions with this family, and Ivy just keeps getting cuter.

Ani 1st Birthday https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2017/4/ani-1st-birthday My most requested color scheme for girls is pink and gold.  It was so refreshing when this mom wanted something new.   She requested teal, orange, and pink, and this little girl rocked it.   Adorable cake stand from Unpolished and Pretty.  She has a website and can also be found on Instagram and Etsy.   One banner from a business called Two Chihuahuas.  She is on Etsy, facebook, and Instagram.   The Backdrop and Floordrop are from my favorite backdrop vendor Backdrop Outlet.   The adorable floral crown is from a vendor called Love Crush Crowns.  Her waterproof durable crowns are always the perfect addition to every little princesses cake smash.  She can be found on facebook, etsy, and Instagram as well.

Millers https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2017/4/millers It was so fun to take family photos for this family.  I serve with Andrea in the primary presidency and it has been fun getting to know her, and her family.  Bruce is quite the character and was constantly making me and his parents laugh.

Aly https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2017/4/aly I am dreaming of warm summer days right now, and those thoughts take me back to Gorgeous Aly's Senior session.  We had a gorgeous location and the sun was coming through the trees for most of the session.  We only had about 5-10 minutes of rain and thunder, but once that cleared it couldn't have been more perfect.   She was so fun, easy going, and relaxed during her session.

Clark Family https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2016/3/clark-family This was my second time working with this family in the past few months and I was so excited to work with them again.  I got to photograph little Jayci and Graycen and Jayci's newborn session.  This time I got to photograph the whole family.  This family got all the good genes I tell you.  Model Status for every single kid.  This mom and Dad have to have a lot of patience with so many teenagers.  The Dad said he has his gun loaded.  You would have to with this many gorgeous girls.  For the Location we wanted somewhere with snow and rustic wood.  I have a friend that offered her families property and it was perfect.  They braved the cold snowy day and we were able to capture some great photos.

Ivy Newborns https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2016/3/ivy-newborns This was a really fun and unique newborn session.  Typically parents don't need to bring anything along to the session, but when they have something they want to include we make sure to do it.  This little gals dad is a HUGE Grateful dead fan.  Huge as in they went on their honeymoon to a concert, he has a replica guitar, and Ivy already has a Grateful Dead onsie.  Dad brought his guitar and wanted to incorporate it into the session but still keep the session neutral, clean, and timeless.  I think we did just that.  I love how this session turned out.

Jayci Newborns https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2016/3/jayci-newborns It was such a treat getting to work with the Clark family and photograph their newest little one Jayci.  I also got to photograph her older sister.  She was not to sure about photos at first but we got her to warm up.

Orr Family https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2016/3/orr-family After the crazy rush of family photos in September and October I had the Orr family contact me about family photos.  The only day we could do them was November 14th.  I thought for sure there would be snow, wind, and freezing temperatures.  We completely lucked out.  It was still really cold out and windy, but the sun came out which made for some dreamy warm photos and helped the kids last longer than 10 minutes.  This mom is seriously gorgeous and should be a model!

Kynoch Boys https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2016/3/kynoch-boys I have this amazing friend here in Saint Anthony and it is always a treat to photograph her family.  We have a trade going hair cuts for photos and I LOVE getting my hair done by her.   She is a magician.  She really wanted to have some themed photos for her Christmas cards so we played around with a few different ideas and I LOVE what we ended up with.  A manly-adorable Christmas card.  The Antlers on the Tee pee are from a deer her husband shot and the Tee pee was made by my talented sister Amanda Conley over at Amanda Conley Photography.

Eliana https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2016/3/eliana Just after Moving away from Bonners Ferry my Sister in law gave birth to my new niece.  It was so hard not being up there to take photos of all her adorableness.  I was so excited when they made the 8 1/2 hour trip right after having her to have photos taken.  She was not very cooperative during the photo session but we still were able to get some adorable photos.

Carey https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2015/11/carey

It is always great when I get to take photos of my nephews.  They are such handsome boys.  It was raining when we got out of the car for the session and by the time we walked to the spot it had cleared up and ended up being gorgeous.  I love how their photos turned out.  And props to this mom for living in a house full of boys!

Tinley https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2015/11/tinley I had the opportunity of taking photos of my niece this past month.  It was so much being able to love and squish on her.  She is adorable.  Her Dad decided to surprise mom and bring a long a stuffed bear that the mom loved and we snuck it into the pictures while mom was napping.  We were also able to capture a really cool shot that makes it look like the baby is suspended in the air just resting on dads hands (the baby was at no time in the air- safety first).  The mom mentioned she loved the color green so we made sure to include some green while still keeping the neutral organic look that is timeless.  I love how all of her photos turned out.  I could have take photos of her all day.

Merrick https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2015/11/merrick This is the second time I have taken photos for the Merrick Family and we had a great time out at the Sand Dunes.  They seem to be a popular spot and look for photos this year.  There is so much versatility out there that every session can look different and I love that.  The Mom and Boys really wanted to bring their dog Teddy along for the photos.  Dad wasn't too excited about the idea but I think it all worked out.  Teddy wanted to be in every photo and loved running around the dunes.

Kunz https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2015/11/kunz This was the second session I was able to do for this family.  I was able to photograph Dyllen over a year ago for his first Birthday photos.  It was so much fun to be able to see how much the boys have grown.  We had a blast out at the sand dunes and were able to get some great shots.  The boys and Dad enjoyed jumping off the dunes at the end and we were able to create a fun shot of that.  Then we finished the session off at an old bridge.  The water in the river was so low that they were able to walk right out on the rocks and be in the middle of the river with water surrounding them.  This made it so that we could create some really cool shots.  We didn't have much time at the bridge location before dark but I was happy we were able to get some.  The mom mentioned that both her and her husbands Grandpas worked for the railroad so she wanted to incorporate train tracks somehow.  Since shooting on railroad tracks in Illegal and dangerous we decided to get the tracks in the background of the photo.  We just happened to show up at the right time because there was a train stopped on the tracks and we were able to get it in the background.  I love how their photos turned out.

Kayden and Hadley https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2015/10/kayden-and-hadley I was so excited to do my first twin newborn session ever, however I was also nervous.  I had never worked with twins and had heard sessions go either way.  Either it is impossible to get them to sleep at the same time, or they are a dream.  Luckily mine was the second of the two.  They were a absolute dream.  We completed their session in 2 hours which is crazy for a twin session.  They loved being cuddle up right next to each other and if I tried to move them apart they would cuddle right back up with each other.  We only had one accident right at the beginning when Kayden decided he would soak his moms arm.  We were able to capture some amazing moments between the parents and newborns, and with the newborns together.

Orr Family https://heathercareyphoto.com/blog/2015/10/orr-family I absolutely LOVE being able to work with return clients.  I photographed Tenley when she was a newborn and then did family photos with them when Tenley was 6 Months old.  She is 18 months now and it was so fun to see how much her and Brevan have grown up.  We found a great location for photos and there was no one else around, which I absolutely loved.  We were able to let the kids play with sticks, rocks, leaves, and dirt and capture them in their element.  We even played hide and seek, danced, and played tag during the session to get some of their best smiles.  During the session we saw a rabbit go across the dirt road and into the bushes.  Brevan was immediately in hunter mode and took off after it saying "We are going to chase it, shoot it, and cook it up."  He is definitely a hunters son.  He really wanted a picture of himself acting like he was shooting a bow and arrow.  Tenley brought her teddy bear along and he definitely made it into a few pictures.  Her mom said that she takes it everywhere.  You can tell in the pictures it is her best friend.  This family made my job so enjoyable and easy.  I love all the candid moments we were able to capture.  I am already counting down the days until I get to photograph them again.
